We had the chance to sit down with wine ambassador, Darren Jahn, and ask him a few questions about the wines being showcased at the event, his favourite dishes on the degustation menu and his highlights working with the Oatley family.

Tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started in the industry

I’ve been in wine since I was a teenager! Yes, well before I was of legal age. Growing up in Perth and enjoying my formative wine years in Margaret River, I have a definite leaning to the wines of the west, especially Margaret River Chardonnay, however in the last decade working with the Oatley family I discovered Mudgee, its wines and the terrific town, so I’m a big fan of the Central West too. I live in Sydney and travel the country promoting our wines – yes, it’s a dream job!

What is your favourite dish on the degustation menu?

All of them! I’m a seafood and dessert fan so this menu covers all bases for me. It was fun matching the wines and I’m looking forward to putting my taste buds to the test and to receiving feedback from the guests.

What do you enjoy most about degustation dining and wine pairings?

Dego dining is the best – small serves of lots of different tastes with usually an interesting array of wines. Put simply, it’s great fun.

What is your personal favourite type of wine to drink? What would you typically pair this with?

Come on! That’s like asking a mother if she has a favourite child. My favourites are Champagne, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Chianti, not in that order, but if serving over a meal, that would be the order I’d work with. Riesling and oysters and duck and pinot are my two favourite, easy wine and food matches.

What have been your highlights working with Robert Oatley Wines?

Discovering Mudgee first and foremost – I fell in love with the town and bought a beautiful historic cottage that I run as a self cater B&B and head out there often to stay myself. Working with our talented winemaking team provides constant rewards – we’ve a wide array of terrific wines that are winning countless awards – source of a great deal of pride.
